Nova Andradina is a city in the southeast of Mato Grosso do Sul, in Brazil's cattle and farming interior. It is a relatively young town, founded in the mid-twentieth century as the agricultural frontier moved west. Like many towns of that period, it was laid out on a regular plan from the start.
The map shows that plan clearly. Straight streets cross at right angles, divided into regular blocks and interrupted here and there by squares and wider avenues. Beyond the edge of town the grid gives way to large rural properties. Long fence lines and dirt roads run across gently rolling country, with small streams and strips of woodland in the low ground.
