Nova Kakhovka stands on the left bank of the Dnipro in southern Ukraine. It was built from the early 1950s as a planned town to go with the Kakhovka hydroelectric station. On the map, the plan is easy to see. There are straight avenues, regular blocks and a central area arranged with care, all set parallel to the river.
The town's history is bound up with the dam, which created the large Kakhovka Reservoir upstream. In June 2023 the dam was destroyed, which caused severe flooding downstream and drained the reservoir. The town has been under occupation since 2022, and its situation remains part of the ongoing war.
