Nova Prata Map Poster & Print
Nova Prata lies in the north-east of Rio Grande do Sul, in the part of the Serra Gaúcha settled largely by Italian immigrants from the late nineteenth century. The landscape is hilly and green, with farms, woodland and vineyards spread across the slopes, and the town grew as a centre for the surrounding rural communities. Its streets reflect both planning and terrain.
Nova Prata is widely known for basalt, and quarrying and working this dark volcanic stone is an important local activity; the town calls itself Brazil's national capital of basalt. On the map, the centre has a fairly regular layout of blocks, while the outer streets bend and curve to follow the ridges and valleys of the surrounding hills.
A Nova Prata map poster shows a town set into a rolling landscape, not laid out on a flat plain. In black and white, the orderly core and the curving outer roads create a pleasing contrast, and the countryside around the streets remains open. It is a careful portrait of a Gaúcho town with Italian roots and stone at the centre of its identity.

Curving hill roads
Beyond the centre, roads bend along ridges and descend into valleys, drawing flowing lines that reflect the rolling shape of the Serra Gaúcha.
Basalt country
Nova Prata is known for the dark basalt quarried in the area, a stone used in building and paving across the region and central to the local economy.
