Nowa Sól lies on the Oder in Lubusz Voivodeship in western Poland. The river curves past the town on its eastern side, and the map is organised around it, with the historic centre close to the bank and the newer districts spreading away from the water.
The name means new salt, a reference to the salt trade that gave the town its early importance in the sixteenth century, when salt was brought up the river and stored here. Later industry and a small river port continued the town's connection to the Oder.
