Nyêmo Map Poster
Nyêmo is a county in Tibet, west of Lhasa, in rugged country cut by river valleys draining toward the Yarlung Tsangpo. The county town lies in one of those valleys. From above, the settlement is long and narrow: a main road, a river and a strip of fields packed onto the valley floor, with steep, empty slopes rising on either side.
On a map, the contrast is striking. The mountains are almost blank, broken only by gullies and occasional tracks, while all human activity is concentrated in the thin green corridor below. Streets run mostly parallel to the valley, and the few cross streets end where the slope becomes too steep.
Nyêmo is known across Tibet for its traditional incense, made by hand from local wood and herbs, and is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Thönmi Sambhota, credited with creating the Tibetan script. A Nyêmo map poster shows the valley as a narrow line of settlement through the mountains.

Mountain slopes
Steep, largely uninhabited slopes surround the valley. In a minimalist print, they become broad blank areas that emphasise the settlement's narrow shape.
River course
A river runs along the valley toward the Yarlung Tsangpo. Its line and the road beside it give the composition its main direction.
