Olavanna is a panchayat area on the southern outskirts of Kozhikode, on the Malabar coast of Kerala. Like much of this coast, it does not look like a town with a centre and an edge. Houses are scattered through dense greenery, connected by narrow lanes that twist around compound walls, paddy land and small waterways. Only a few main roads cut straight through.
From above, this creates a fine, branching street network, more like the veins of a leaf than a grid. Low-lying wet ground and streams divide the area. The Arabian Sea coast and the river mouths around Kozhikode are close by, and the city itself grows denser to the north. Olavanna shows the gradual shift from urban Kozhikode to the semi-rural villages beyond.
