Palmares is in the southern Zona da Mata of Pernambuco, the humid band of north-eastern Brazil that has been sugarcane country for centuries. The town lies along the Una River, whose winding course passes through it, and the streets have grown in the valley and on the lower slopes around it.
Its name recalls the Quilombo dos Palmares, the famous seventeenth-century community of people who escaped slavery, which was centred in the hills of this wider region. The name gives the town a particular place in the history and memory of Afro-Brazilian resistance.
From above, the town appears as a compact core along the river, with neighbourhoods extending up the hillsides. Around it lie rolling hills covered in cane fields and crossed by narrow roads.
