Panevėžys is the fifth-largest city in Lithuania, spread across flat country in the north of the country. The Nevėžis river winds through it from north to south, bending in loose meanders and bordered by parkland along much of its course. The historic centre sits close to the river, with streets radiating from central squares.
Beyond the core, the map shows a mix of older low-rise neighbourhoods, Soviet-era housing estates and industrial areas linked by wide roads. The city is known for its theatre tradition, associated with the director Juozas Miltinis, and it is the starting point of the Aukštaitija narrow-gauge railway, a heritage line that runs toward Lake Rubikiai.
