Pangkham, also known as Pangsang, lies in the northeast of Myanmar's Shan State, close to the border with China. It is the administrative centre of the Wa Self-Administered Division. On a map, the town occupies the lower ground of a hilly landscape. Its streets gather in a valley, and roads wind out along the contours of the surrounding ridges.
The terrain decides almost everything about the layout. Flat land is scarce, so the built-up area is compact and irregular, with streets bending to follow slopes and watercourses.
