Parnarama sits in eastern Maranhão on the banks of the Parnaíba, the river that forms the long boundary between Maranhão and Piauí. From above, the town is a modest cluster of streets set back from the water, with the river's broad, sandy course running past and meandering through the flat interior landscape.
