Pathum Thani sits on the Chao Phraya river just north of Bangkok, in the low, wet plain of central Thailand. The river curves through the town, and much of the older settlement lies along its banks. From above, the map is shaped as much by water as by roads: canals cut across the land, and streets often follow them.
The province is historically linked to Mon communities who settled here, and their temples and traditions remain part of local identity. East of the river, the large Rangsit canal system, dug in the late nineteenth century, turned the surrounding plain into a grid of rice fields and waterways.
