Pavlovo stands on the Oka River in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, southwest of Nizhny Novgorod. The river sweeps past in a wide curve, and the town rises on the steep bank above it. Ravines cut into the slope, so the streets divide into separate hillside sections instead of forming one continuous grid.
For centuries the town has been known for metalwork, in particular locks, knives and cutlery made by local craftsmen and later in factories. It is also home to the Pavlovo Bus Plant, whose PAZ buses are a familiar sight across Russia. In addition, the town is associated with the Pavlovo lemon, a variety traditionally grown indoors.
