Pelentong lies in the Johor Bahru district, east of the city centre, in the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. On a map it reads as a suburban landscape: planned housing estates with curving streets and cul-de-sacs, main roads and highways linking them, and patches of green where plantations and open land remain. The Straits of Johor lie not far to the south.
Like much of the Johor Bahru area, Pelentong has grown quickly in recent decades as the metropolitan area has expanded, drawing residents who work across the region, including in nearby Singapore. The result is a patchwork of newer neighbourhoods, each with its own internal street pattern, fitted between older settlements and roads.
