Penonomé is the capital of Coclé Province, on the plains of central Panama between the Pacific coast and the cordillera. The Inter-American Highway runs through town and gives the map a strong diagonal. The older streets around the central plaza form a Spanish colonial grid, and newer districts spread along the highway in both directions.
Rivers run across the plains around the town, and the higher ground of the central mountains rises to the north. On a black-and-white poster, the curves of the rivers and the long straight line of the highway frame the town's more regular blocks. Penonomé is one of the older towns in Panama, dating back to the colonial period.
