Petlād lies in the Anand district of Gujarat, in the fertile Charotar region. From above, the town has a tightly packed old centre, with narrow streets and lanes winding between buildings. Around it, newer areas follow a more open layout. Beyond the edges, the flat land is covered in fields, crossed by roads connecting Petlād to the many villages and towns nearby.
Petlād has long been a market town serving the surrounding farmland. The Charotar region is known for agriculture, including tobacco, and the area has a strong tradition of emigration, with many families now living in other parts of India and abroad. Before Indian independence, Petlād was part of the princely state of Baroda.
