Petrich sits in the far southwest of Bulgaria, in the warm valley of the Struma River basin, close to the borders of Greece and North Macedonia. On the map the town is a compact grid on sloping ground, with the steep Belasitsa range rising immediately to the south and farmland and orchards spreading across the plain to the north.
The area has a long history. Nearby is the site of the fortress associated with the Battle of Kleidion in 1014, a turning point in the wars between Byzantium and Tsar Samuil. The nearby Rupite area, with its mineral springs, is known as the home of the famous clairvoyant Baba Vanga and attracts many visitors.
