Pinillos is a municipality in the department of Bolívar in northern Colombia, in the low, wet region known as the Mompox Depression. On a map the town is a small cluster of streets beside the water. Around it lies a large area of channels, lagoons and floodplain.
The landscape is shaped by the Magdalena River system, which splits into several branches here and spreads into marshes, or ciénagas. Water sets the rhythm of life, and the map shows how closely the settlement follows the riverbank.
