Pirkkala lies in the Pirkanmaa region of Finland, immediately south-west of Tampere. It borders Lake Pyhäjärvi, one of the large lakes around Tampere, and on a map its shoreline is irregular, with bays, headlands and small islands. Much of the municipality combines residential areas with forest and water.
The main built-up area has grown as a suburb of Tampere, with residential streets forming loops and cul-de-sacs among trees rather than straight blocks. Tampere-Pirkkala Airport lies within the municipality, and its runway forms a long straight line through the forest, one of the few geometric features on the map.
