Planaltina, in the state of Goiás, lies on the high plateau of central Brazil near the boundary of the Federal District. It is separate from the Brasília region of the same name. On a map it forms a sprawling network of residential neighbourhoods laid out on high, fairly flat ground.
The street pattern is mostly regular, made up of rectangular blocks that fill the land in successive stages of growth. Between neighbourhoods, and around the edge of the town, the cerrado shows through: open savanna with scattered trees, streams and patches of gallery forest along the watercourses.
