Pleasant Hill sits in the middle of Contra Costa County, in the Diablo Valley east of the Berkeley Hills. On a map it is mostly suburban: curving residential streets, cul-de-sacs, parks and schools. A few main roads run through it, and Interstate 680 runs along its eastern edge.
The city grew rapidly after the Second World War, and its layout reflects that era of planned residential development. It is home to Diablo Valley College, one of the largest community colleges in the region. The Contra Costa Canal crosses the area, and Mount Diablo rises to the east.
