Pokachi is a town in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug of western Siberia, built in the late Soviet period to serve nearby oil fields. It stands in a landscape of taiga, bogs and small lakes, and from above the town is a compact, clearly bounded shape surrounded by forest and wetland.
The layout reflects its planned origins: groups of multi-storey apartment blocks arranged in microdistricts, straight main roads, and public buildings placed in open spaces between them. Beyond the town, roads and pipelines run out across the flat land towards oil sites.
