Pokrovsk lies in the west of Ukraine's Donetsk region, on the open steppe. On a map the town has a largely regular street grid, organised around a railway junction and extended by districts built for the coal mines nearby. Beyond the edges, straight roads and field boundaries run across level land.
Founded in the late nineteenth century as a railway station settlement, the town was known for decades as Krasnoarmiisk before its historical name, Pokrovsk, was restored in 2016. Its economy depended on coal mining and the railway. In recent years the town has been severely affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
