Polavaram lies on the banks of the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh, at a point where the river emerges from the hills of the Eastern Ghats toward the coastal plain. The town is known across India for the Polavaram Project, a large multipurpose dam and irrigation scheme on the Godavari.
