Ponce is Puerto Rico's principal city on the south coast, facing the Caribbean across a broad coastal plain. From above, the historic centre forms a compact grid around a formal plaza. The city spreads south towards the port and the waterfront, and north towards the foothills of the Cordillera Central. El Vigía hill rises just north of downtown, giving the street pattern a clear point of reference.
Known as La Perla del Sur, the Pearl of the South, Ponce has a historic core notable for its architecture. Plaza Las Delicias holds the cathedral and the striped red and black Parque de Bombas, a nineteenth-century firehouse. Castillo Serrallés looks down from El Vigía, and the Museo de Arte de Ponce holds one of the most important art collections in the Caribbean.

The hill rises just north of downtown and is crowned by Castillo Serrallés. Roads curl around its slopes, breaking the grid into softer, winding lines.
Port and La Guancha
Avenues run south from the centre to the Caribbean shore, where the port and the La Guancha boardwalk meet the water. The coastline gives the poster its lower edge.
