Ponda lies in central Goa, inland from the coast and away from the beaches most visitors know. The town centre is a crossing of roads on uneven ground, and from above it spreads outward along routes that follow ridges and valleys. The Mandovi and Zuari river systems bound the wider Ponda area to the north and south.
The surrounding taluka is known as the heartland of Goa's Hindu temples, including the well-known Mangueshi and Shantadurga temples, many of which were rebuilt inland in the colonial era. Ponda also has the Safa Masjid, one of the older mosques in Goa. Around the town, spice plantations and forested slopes fill the landscape.
