Ponta de Pedras sits on the eastern side of Marajó, the vast river island in the Amazon estuary in the state of Pará. From above, the town is a small grid of streets pressed against a broad expanse of water, with narrow creeks winding into the forest behind it.
Life here is closely tied to the river. Boats connect the town with Belém across the bay, and the surrounding area is known for açaí harvested from palms along the waterways. Much of the land nearby is low and wooded, crossed by channels that rise and fall with the tides.
