Broad bay
Wide open water takes up much of the composition, so the town sits as a small, detailed shape on a large, calm field. The contrast is striking in print.

Portel Map Poster & Print
Portel lies in the Marajó region of Pará, on a wide body of water fed by the rivers of the lower Amazon basin. From above, water sets the terms. The urban area is a small, dense patch on the shore, and it looks even smaller next to the broad surface of the bay and the unbroken forest that surrounds it on the map.
The streets run back from the waterfront in a simple pattern, and the town's ties to the river are plain to see: movement here has long depended on boats rather than highways. The shoreline is the town's main edge. Channels and inlets cut into the land around it, and in black and white they read as clear white shapes against the darker texture of the town.
A Portel map poster suits people who know the river towns of Pará, where the waterfront is the town's front door and the arrival of a boat sets the rhythm of the day. It is a map mostly of water and land, with a small community marked where the two meet.

Waterfront edge
The shoreline is the town's main line. Streets end at the water, which shows how closely daily life is tied to the river and to boat traffic.
Winding channels
Smaller rivers and inlets wander through the surrounding land, adding irregular, branching lines that contrast with the short, straight streets of the town.

For anyone from Portel or with family on the rivers of Marajó, this map records a place that few maps show in detail, a town defined by its water and reached, for many visitors, only by boat.
