Porthcawl lies on the coast of Bridgend county in South Wales, facing the Bristol Channel. The town sits on a low headland, so the sea curves around it. Sandy bays open on either side, including Rest Bay to the west, which is popular with surfers, and Trecco Bay to the east.
The old harbour is sheltered by a breakwater with a small white lighthouse at its end. The seafront esplanade runs along the southern edge, and the Coney Beach funfair has occupied the eastern shore for generations. Every September the town hosts one of the world's largest Elvis festivals.
