Valley-bound layout
As in most towns in this terrain, building follows the available flat ground. Streets run with the valley rather than across it, which gives the town a long, narrow footprint.

Puzi Map Poster & Print
Puzi lies in the rugged southeast of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep hills, deep valleys and fast rivers at the edge of the Wuling Mountains. Towns here rarely have room for a grid. Streets squeeze along the valley floor or climb the slopes, and the shape of a settlement is set by the terrain as much as by any plan.
Seen from above, settlements in this kind of country tend to stretch along a valley, with a dense band of buildings and roads and quieter lanes branching into side gullies. Terraced fields and small villages cover the surrounding slopes, reached by roads that wind back and forth to gain height. Every line on the map reflects the ground beneath it.
A Puzi map poster reduces that complex ground to clean black lines. The switchbacks of mountain roads, the curve of a river and the close-packed streets of the town sit together on the sheet, showing how people have made room for themselves in steep country. It is a distinctive image for anyone with ties to the area.

Switchback roads
Roads climbing out of the valleys wind in repeated bends, and these zigzags are among the most graphic features on the printed map.
Terraced slopes
The hillsides around the town are worked into terraces and small fields, and village paths form a fine network across the higher ground.
