Qabula is a town in the Punjab province of Pakistan, in the agricultural country between Arifwala and Pakpattan. The land here is flat and intensively farmed, and the map reflects that: long, straight field boundaries, irrigation channels, and roads that run for miles without a bend.
The town forms a compact knot at the meeting point of these routes. Its centre is made up of close-packed streets and small blocks, the heart of local trade for the villages around it. On the edges, the fabric loosens into houses, compounds and the first fields of the surrounding farmland.
