Rawtenstall is the main town of Rossendale in Lancashire, set deep in a valley carved by the River Irwell. On a map the built area follows the valley floor and climbs its sides in terraced rows, while the moors above remain almost empty. The town is shaped by its terrain: dense along the water, thinning quickly as the ground rises.
The layout still reflects its textile past. Mills once lined the river, and rows of stone terraces were built close by for the people who worked in them. Rawtenstall is also the northern terminus of the East Lancashire Railway, a heritage line running down the valley. It is also home to Fitzpatrick's, often described as the last original temperance bar in Britain.

Roads converge in the centre and then branch along side valleys, the river threads through, and the terraces appear as fine parallel strokes on the hillsides. Long rows of stone terraces climb the slopes in tight parallel lines. The pattern is typical of Pennine mill towns and comes out especially well in fine black linework.
Railway terminus
The East Lancashire Railway ends in Rawtenstall, and you can trace the line heading south down the valley. It is a heritage route that still carries steam and diesel services.
