Riegelsberg lies on the hills north of Saarbrücken, where the city gives way to forest and smaller settlements. On a map it forms an elongated shape, following the main roads that run through it, with residential streets branching into side valleys and ending at the edge of the woods. Large forested areas frame much of the town.
The Saarbahn, the regional tram-train line, runs through Riegelsberg on its route between Saarbrücken and Lebach, so the town is closely tied to the city while keeping a more rural setting. Former mining history shaped much of this part of Saarland, although today the town is mainly residential.
