Ris-Orangis lies in Essonne, south of Paris, on the left bank of the Seine near Évry. On a map, the town stretches from the river up onto the plateau, with older streets near the water and the railway, and newer residential areas and housing estates further inland toward the woodland of the Forêt de Sénart across the river.
The town was formed from two older villages, Ris and Orangis, which explains its double name and its two distinct cores. It is also known for the Fondation Dranem, a retirement home for artists founded in the early twentieth century by the music-hall performer Dranem.
