Rocas Atoll lies off the northeastern coast of Brazil and is the only atoll in the South Atlantic. From above it is a small, near-oval reef ring enclosing a shallow lagoon. Tide pools form inside it at low water, and two low, sandy islets rest on the reef's western side.
There are no towns or roads. The atoll is a strictly protected area, and the only structures are a lighthouse and a small research station used by scientists and park staff. The map is almost entirely reef, sand and water, a rare example of a coral atoll drawn at close range.
Rocas became Brazil's first marine biological reserve in 1979. Together with Fernando de Noronha it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site valued for turtles, seabirds and marine life. A Rocas Atoll map poster shows the delicate ring of reef as a single graphic form.
