Romny lies in Sumy Oblast in north-eastern Ukraine, where the small Romen river flows into the Sula. The town is old: it appears in chronicles from the late eleventh century, and over the centuries it grew into a regional trading centre on the left-bank Ukrainian plains.
From above, the rivers and their wide, marshy floodplains dominate. The Sula winds in loose curves, bordered by meadows and wetland, while the town rises on higher ground above them. Streets fan out from the centre, and the pattern shifts between older irregular areas and later, more regular blocks.
