Rovigo lies in the Polesine, the low land between the lower courses of the Adige and the Po. From above the landscape is perfectly flat, criss-crossed by canals, drainage channels and straight roads. The town centre is compact, with a small canal, the Adigetto, running through it and the older streets arranged around a series of piazzas.
Two towers remain from the medieval castle, one of them noticeably leaning. The octagonal Rotonda, the Temple of the Blessed Virgin of Succour, is the town's most distinctive building, and Rovigo's Accademia dei Concordi holds an art collection including Venetian painting.
