Rustavi lies on the Mtkvari river, southeast of Tbilisi, in the Kvemo Kartli region of Georgia. The modern city was built from the 1940s around a large metallurgical plant, and the map still shows its planned origin. Wide avenues run in straight lines, blocks are regular and generous, and green space surrounds the buildings in well-organised courtyards.
The river divides the city, with the older planned centre on one bank and newer districts on the other. The steelworks and industrial zone occupy a large area of their own, clearly apart from the housing. Beyond, the dry plain of Kvemo Kartli opens out, and the Rustavi International Motorpark adds a distinctive looping racing circuit on the outskirts.
