Saalfeld lies on the river Saale in southern Thuringia, where the valley opens between forested hills. The town has medieval origins, and the map still shows a compact historic centre with streets converging on the market square, surrounded by later districts that follow the river and climb the slopes.
The town is widely known for the Feengrotten, the Fairy Grottoes, a former alum slate mine now open as show caves famous for their colourful mineral formations. Upstream, the Saale is held back by a series of dams that form long reservoirs in the Thuringian uplands.
