Sabha is the main city of the Fezzan, the desert region of southwestern Libya. On the map it is a spread-out settlement surrounded by open desert, with neighbourhoods divided by wide roads and scattered cultivated plots where groundwater allows palms and crops to grow.
The city grew as an oasis and trading point on routes through the Sahara, and it later became the administrative centre of the south. On a hill above the city stands an old fort from the Italian colonial period, one of Sabha's recognisable landmarks.
A Sabha map poster shows how a desert city takes shape: long, straight roads, blocks of varying density and wide empty space around everything. The lack of a coastline or river makes the street pattern itself the main subject, and the surrounding desert frames it cleanly.

Fort on the hill
The colonial-era fort stands on raised ground overlooking the city. It is a small but distinct point on the map, surrounded by empty slopes.
