Sachīn lies just south of Surat in Gujarat, on the flat coastal plain near the Arabian Sea. From above, you can make out two distinct parts. The older town has close-set streets and an irregular shape, while beside it the planned industrial estate is laid out in large rectangular plots along straight roads.
Before 1948, Sachīn was the capital of a small princely state ruled by a Siddi dynasty, a history that sets it apart from many neighbouring towns. Today it is mainly known as an industrial area, part of the wider economy of Surat, one of India's fastest-growing cities.
