Sahand is a new town in East Azerbaijan province, built southwest of Tabriz as part of Iran's programme of planned satellite cities. It takes its name from Mount Sahand, the large volcanic massif to the south, and from above its layout is quite different from older Iranian towns.
Streets follow a deliberate plan: wide main roads, regular residential blocks and clearly defined zones for housing and services. The town occupies open, gently sloping ground, and the surrounding land is sparse, so the edges of the grid stand out clearly against empty terrain rather than blending into farmland or older settlements.
Built to absorb housing demand from Tabriz, Sahand has grown steadily in recent decades. The mountain it is named after is a notable landmark of the region. A Sahand map poster shows this planned geometry with unusual clarity, since few places have such a clean edge between town and landscape.
