Sahāranpur lies in the far northwest of Uttar Pradesh, on the level plain between the Yamuna and Ganges rivers, with the Shivalik foothills close to the north. From above, the old city is a compact knot of narrow, winding lanes. Newer districts spread outward in looser grids, and the railway lines and the colonial-era cantonment add straight, rectangular shapes.
Small rivers wind through the urban area and draw irregular lines between the neighbourhoods. The railway junction to the east of the centre links the city to Delhi, Punjab and the hill towns.
