Şaḩneh is a town in Kermanshah Province in western Iran, on the main road that crosses the Zagros between Kermanshah and Hamadan. It sits in a broad valley. From above, the flat, farmed floor contrasts with the steep, bare slopes on either side.
The route through the valley has been used for a very long time. Nearby Bisotun, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has the famous rock relief and inscription of the Persian king Darius I, carved above the old road. Şaḩneh belongs to the same corridor.
