Saint-Genis-Laval lies on the southwestern edge of Lyon, in the Métropole de Lyon. It sits on the slopes that rise from the Rhône and Saône valley towards the Monts du Lyonnais. From above, the town has a compact centre with older streets, then a looser pattern of residential lanes that follow the hilly ground.
The Lyon Observatory is located in Saint-Genis-Laval, set in grounds on the higher part of the commune. The large Lyon Sud hospital site is also here, and on the map its campus shows as a cluster of buildings and internal roads.
