Sainte-Marie sits on the northern shore of Réunion, just east of Saint-Denis, where the island's volcanic mass meets the Indian Ocean. From above, the commune reads as a wedge. A narrow coastal band of streets and neighbourhoods comes first, then a steady rise of farmland and ravines toward the forested heights.
