Salamina is a town in the Caldas Department of Colombia, in the heart of the coffee-growing Andes. It was founded in the nineteenth century during the Antioquian colonisation and sits on a mountain ridge, with the land dropping away sharply on either side. Its historic centre is protected as a national monument for its well-preserved architecture.
From above, Salamina's regular street grid looks almost improbable on such steep ground. The blocks run along the crest around the main plaza and cathedral, and the edges quickly give way to slopes where roads switch back and forth down into the valleys and the coffee farms.
