Salo lies in Southwest Finland, between Turku and Helsinki, on the river that flows through its centre toward the Halikko Bay and the sea. On a map the river is the spine of the town: the commercial core sits on its banks, and residential districts climb gently away on either side among forest and farmland.
In recent decades Salo was widely known for electronics, and it hosted a major Nokia mobile phone plant, which shaped the town's growth and its industrial areas. Since the municipal mergers of 2009 the town has also covered a large rural area with lakes, villages and coast.
