San Pedro Carchá lies in Alta Verapaz in the highlands of Guatemala, right next to the departmental capital, Cobán, so that on a map the two towns nearly touch. The Cahabón River runs past Carchá, and the town's streets form a grid that bends and breaks where the land rises into the surrounding hills.
This is karst country, and the terrain is visible even in a street map: roads curve around rounded hills, and the grid stops abruptly where slopes become too steep.
