Satu Mare lies in the far northwest of Romania, near the borders with Hungary and Ukraine, on the banks of the Someș. On a map, the river is the main feature. It curves across the city in wide bends, with the historic centre on one side and newer districts spreading over both banks.
The centre is arranged around a large square and a few radiating streets. Around them are neighbourhoods of houses, Communist-era apartment blocks and industrial zones. Bridges carry the traffic across the Someș, and the flat plain around the city leaves room for the grid to spread evenly.
