Savigliano lies in the province of Cuneo, on the plain south of Turin, with the Maira River running along its edge. The historic center is compact and densely built, organised around a series of streets and squares. Piazza Santarosa is its main square, with arcades and a triumphal arch. Newer districts and the railway surround it on the flat land.
The town was the birthplace of Giovanni Schiaparelli, the astronomer known for his observations of Mars in the nineteenth century. Around Savigliano, the plain is intensively farmed, and on the map it appears as a regular pattern of fields, straight roads and irrigation channels stretching toward the Alps.
